Runtime and installation
vminfo release artifacts are compiled Go binaries. The normal local workflow does not require Python, a database, a daemon, or optional web dependencies. Web mode is part of the same executable and starts only when requested.
Glances is written in Python and uses optional dependency groups for capabilities such as its Web UI/API, exports, graphs, and MCP server. It is widely packaged and can run locally, in a container, or in client/server mode. That larger surface is useful when you need integrations beyond a one-host diagnostic tool.
Neither design is universally simpler. A standalone binary reduces runtime setup; a plugin ecosystem increases extension and export choices.
Terminal, web, and API workflows
Both projects provide a terminal view and a browser/API path. vminfo keeps its web server read-only and stateless: it publishes current snapshots, processes, health warnings, network diagnostics, and a live WebSocket stream. Non-loopback binds require a token, and remote access should use HTTPS through a reverse proxy or an SSH tunnel.
Glances documents Web UI, RESTful, XML-RPC, and client/server modes. It can discover remote Glances servers and export metrics to files or external time-series systems. Choose that model when multi-host or exporter workflows are central.
JSON and automation
vminfo favors a small number of stable command contracts:

- your application integration is Python-first
Choose vminfo when
- you want one compiled binary for TUI, JSON, Web/API, and network diagnostics
- local, on-demand inspection is more important than long-running remote collection
- you need a small, explicit JSON contract for scripts or CI
- your integration target is a Go CLI or service
- Windows, macOS, and Linux should share the same top-level commands
Can they be used together?
Yes. Glances can serve as a broader remote/export layer while vminfo remains an operator-side troubleshooting tool or Go library. Avoid running two permanent collectors unless the additional signals justify the operational cost.
